East Hanover
The
Whippany Fire Department's R.I.C. Team (Rapid Intervention
Crew) assisted East Hanover with a Dryer/Garage Fire this
evening on Fay Drive.

Propane Tank
Leak in East Hanover
The Whippany Fire
Department was dispatched to assist East Hanover FD with a
1000 Gallon Propane Tank leaking from a relief valve ay
Do-It-Yourself Rental. Fire Department personnel
applied a mist to the leak to cool down the relief valve
which in turn stopped the leak. Suburban Propane was
requested to the scene to officially control the leak.

Tractor
Trailer Rollover
The Whippany
Fire Department was dispatched to assist the Cedar Knolls FD
with a reported Tractor Trailer Rollover. The truck
driver apparently lost control of the vehicle while driving
his truck from Route 24 west to northbound Route 287 around
2:20am in Hanover Township. The tractor trailer which
ran off the left side road and struck the guard rail,
overturned and came to a rest on an embankment. A
chemical substance glyoxal, spilled onto the roadway from
his truck, as a result the Morris County Hazmat Team was
requested to assist the Whippany Hazmat Team.

Explosion in
Morristown
The Whippany Fire Department's Rapid Intervention Crew
was dispatched to assist Morristown FD with explosion in the
basement of the Morristown & Morris Township Library on
South Street.

Whippany Fire
Department’s water rescue unit requested to assist in kayak
rescue.
On Monday, March 15, 2010, the Morris
County Fire Coordinator, Chief Jack Alderton called upon the
Whippany Fire Department’s Swiftwater Rescue Team once
again.
The Water Rescue Team was deployed
to Hacklebarney Park in Chester Township. The Swiftwater
Rescue Team met up with units from Long Valley and Fairmount
Fire Departments and the Clinton First Aid & Rescue Squad,
who also have a Swiftwater Rescue Team. A combined effort
was launched to determine if a kayak, located about 1 – 1 ½
miles into the park and being held under water by raging
flood waters in the Black River contained anyone.
Rope rescue units from the Long
Valley and Fairmount Fire Departments provided the rigging
for the Swiftwater Rescue combined team from Clinton First
Aid Squad and Whippany Fire Department who launched an
inflatable boat into the river, after a couple of failed
attempts to reach the kayak members of the team were able to
reach the trapped kayak and determine that no one was in the
craft.
Swiftwater Rescue Team members: Ian
Bell, Tom Cobane, Shawn Johnston, Josh Makowski, Paul
Perrello and Tom Rebyak supported by Ron Barz and Steve
Willans are commended for a job well done.

Whippany Fire
Department’s water rescue unit called into service at
request of Morris County Deputy Fire Coordinator.
Major rains and wind inundate
northern New Jersey creating flash flood conditions and
trapping residents.
On Sunday, March 14, 2010, the Deputy
Fire Coordinator for Morris County called for the assistance
of Water Rescue Teams from throughout the county, one of the
teams pressed into service was the Whippany Fire
Department’s Swiftwater Rescue Unit.
The Water Rescue Team was sent to
assist the rescue of stranded residents in Pequannock, where
the flood stage of the Pompton river is sixteen (16) feet,
but the river crested at over twenty two (22) feet creating
severe flooding conditions and stranding hundreds of
residents. The Whippany Fire Department Water Rescue Team
removed over thirty (30) victims stranded by the flood
waters.
Members of this elite swiftwater
rescue unit are trained to perform rescues in fast moving
water. Swiftwater rescue is one of the most dangerous types
of technical rescue, in which one out of every nine drowning
victims is a rescuer.
The Whippany Fire Department has 17
members trained in Swiftwater Operations and 9 members
trained as Swiftwater Technicians, of these 9 members 5 are
trained to the Advanced Technician level.
