On Monday, March 15, 2010, the Morris County Fire Coordinator, Chief Jack Alderton called upon the Whippany Fire Department’s Swiftwater Rescue Team once again.

The Water Rescue Team was deployed to Hacklebarney Park in Chester Township. The Swiftwater Rescue Team met up with units from Long Valley and Fairmount Fire Departments and the Clinton First Aid & Rescue Squad, who also have a Swiftwater Rescue Team. Rope rescue units from the Long Valley and Fairmount Fire Departments provided the rigging for the Swiftwater Rescue combined team from Clinton First Aid Squad and Whippany Fire Department who launched an inflatable boat into the river, after a couple of failed attempts to reach the kayak members of the team were able to reach the trapped kayak and determine that no one was in the craft.

Whippany Fire Department’s water rescue unit called into service at request of Morris County Deputy Fire Coordinator.

Major rains and wind inundate northern New Jersey creating flash flood conditions and trapping residents.

On Sunday, March 14, 2010, the Deputy Fire Coordinator for Morris County called for the assistance of Water Rescue Teams from throughout the county, one of the teams pressed into service was the Whippany Fire Department’s Swiftwater Rescue Unit.

The Water Rescue Team was sent to assist the rescue of stranded residents in Pequannock, where the flood stage of the Pompton river is sixteen (16) feet, but the river crested at over twenty two (22) feet creating severe flooding conditions and stranding hundreds of residents. The Whippany Fire Department Water Rescue Team removed over thirty (30) victims stranded by the flood waters.

Members of this elite swiftwater rescue unit are trained to perform rescues in fast moving water. Swiftwater rescue is one of the most dangerous types of technical rescue, in which one out of every nine drowning victims is a rescuer.

The Whippany Fire Department has 17 members trained in Swiftwater Operations and 9 members trained as Swiftwater Technicians, of these 9 members 5 are trained to the Advanced Technician level.
